Life isn't fair, and it is not the job of our government to try and make it fair for everyone. We should remember that our Declaration of Independence laid out the truths 'that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'
Our government should also reflect the ideas put forth in the Constitution to form a more perfect union. Those being to 'establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty.'
Our Founding Fathers did not mention universal healthcare, national educational systems, or handouts for those in need. The Framers of the Constitution were wise men who wanted a solid framework to allow those Americans the opportunity to live and let live as they saw fit. As modern Americans we feel the strong hold of bureaucracy and regulation that we struggle against on a daily basis. We can easily vote with our feet and our wallets to reward those businesses and organizations that we choose. We do not need bureaucratic subsidies to artificially support failing businesses and dying industries. Our government should protect our borders, encourage truly free trade, and let the free capitalistic market decide what it values.
Unfortunately we must also remember some hard truths about humans; that some of us are naturally lazy and selfish. Should we reward those who do not contribute to our society? Should we artificially prop up those who do not and will not exert effort to help themselves advance? Why should our government handicap those successful and motivated individuals by taking the fruits of their labor to distribute to those who will not help themselves?
A smaller government should be our goal. A more direct connection to our elected representative officials should be our goal. A stronger and more informed community should be our goal. Our goal should be a better, stronger, and more productive government and citizenry.
